Chapter Twelve

Mackenzie

What a fucking whirlwind of a fourty-eight hours. Well, if I’m being honest with myself, it’s been more like a week and a half. Since the day I turned twenty-one and fucked the enemy in the bed of a pickup truck. I feel like one of those fucking women in stories or movies that lose their mind and cause their life to spiral all because of a man—which in itself is a giant red flag…for both of us at this point.

Yes, I had my ducks in a row. Kinda. I had a plan. Still do. I perform the tasks asked of me for now and nothing more, stay under the radar…

Well, after high-tailing it out of the Rebels’ compound and straight into enemy territory, I’ve gone and put a massive target on my head.

The doctor I spoke to in New York a year ago—when I told Jake I had to attend a work thing for my EMT position—is under the same impression as me. My mom shouldn’t still be as sick as she is if she’s getting regular treatment for her mental state; I showed him videos I’ve secretly recorded on some of my visits with Mom. The doctors at the psych ward have said she’ll never get better, that I should give up on her, but I know in my gut that Jake has his mouth to their money-grabbing ears. If I can get $75,000 together, I can get her out of there and to a real nice place in New York where the doctor thinks he can make drastic improvements within a year.

I may be reaching with my expectations and hopes, but I’ve got to do something. She’s rotting away in there.

Now, though, fuck…the sun is rising as I drive Spence and I back to the station. The patient died on the way to the hospital after a really bad seizure. Fucking horrible to watch. But there was a moment watching him where I envisioned that being me. Dying in the back of an ambulance. Would anyone really care? It’d really fuck up Jake and the Rebels’ plans for the racing season. And Mom…Jake wouldn’t have a reason to treat her like shit anymore because it’s always been my fault.

I know what I did yesterday is going to have consequences, repercussions, but the fallout could be huge, or it could be small. If I’m gone sooner than I planned, then there’s nobody for Jake to punish. Although, Aleko shooting up the yard will probably level up their rivalry from intense foes to full-blown murderous enemies.

The ambulance radio beeps before Anthea’s voice comes through, pulling me from the intrusive thoughts and back into the real world.

“Mac, there’s a man here named Jake, says he’s your brother, he said he needs to speak to you but he’d wait until you get back.”

Never have I mixed the life I’ve built for myself with the one I was born into. Apart from Spencer and Human Resources, the details of my family life are unknown to everyone at the station.
